The Amgen Tour of California, Brought drama and excitement of a professional, international bicycle stage race to the central Valley. The world's top professional cycling teams competed over a nine-day, 800-mile race on a route that included Merced, Madera, Fresno, and Tulare Counties. The Amgen Tour of California brought more than 40,000 visitors to Old Town Clovis for the finish on Pollasky just south of Bullard and about $830,000.00 in revenue to the Clovis economy.
Bob Keyes (Chairman), Clovis Police Captain and Avid cyclist organized and led the committee through weekly meetings, numerous conference calls, personal appearances and in the trenches worked with everyone on the committee who needed his assistance from sponsorships to media interviews to dinning accommodations for the athletes.
Mike Shuemake (Technical Director), President of Central Valley Cycling Charitable Association, and avid cyclist and owner of Central Valley Trailer Repair, worked closely with Amgen Tour of California course directors every step of the way of the offer the most diverse yet pro-cyclist friendly route through the Sierra foothills dubbed this year's "wild card."
Mike Dozier (Operations Director), Fresno State University, worked with local hotels to secure more than 600 rooms over two nights for athletes and support staff, and provided supervision and directions for the proposal to bring the Tour of California to Clovis.
Janet Stoll-Lee (Public Relations Director), The Clovis Police Department's Public Information Officer, worked with all levels of local Media from television to the web to promote the race and the events leading up to it. She orchestrated news stories, live on-air promotions, public service announcement: more than 120 stories/ mention total.
Shawn Miller (Marketing Director), Clovis Business Development Manager, worked with the local Tourism and Fresno Bee to generate advertising and Special 16-page race guide newspaper insert. He wrote the proposal to bring the Tour to Clovis and the marketing plan. He originated and organized the RaceTracker daily viewing events at local restaurants, and purchased radio spots.
Greg Newman (Sales/Sponsorship Director), Sierra Vista Mall's General Manager, was largely responsible for raising the nearly $100,000.00 needed to cover expenses to hosting the Tour in Clovis. He facilitated the need of all the sponsors and helped develop the events banners, posters, flyers, and program in addition to offering the mall for Tour events and shuttle parking on race day.
